On November 30, 2025, the Swiss population voted on the so-called Inheritance Tax Initiative (Initiative for a Future) proposed by the Young Socialists (JUSO). The initiative aimed to introduce a national inheritance and gift tax, applicable above a tax-free allowance of 50 million Swiss francs. A tax rate of 50 percent would have been applied to amounts exceeding this allowance. The revenue was intended to be used for climate protection measures and the transformation of the economy.
The initiative failed decisively: approximately 79 percent of voters rejected it, while only about 21 percent voted in favor. It also clearly failed to secure a majority of cantons, as no canton voted in favor. Voter turnout was around 43 percent
